How to Season a Quartz Banger (and Titanium Nails)

Season Your New Quartz Banger: a quartz terp slurper banger and a titanium nail on a white background

Updated October 2026 · Shatter Kitchen

To season a new quartz banger, heat the empty banger evenly for about 30 to 60 seconds, let it cool completely on its own, and repeat two or three times to burn off any residue left from manufacturing and packing. Quartz does not need to be coated with oil the way people once thought; a clean burn-off and a low-temperature first dab are all it takes. Titanium nails are different and benefit from a true seasoning layer, which we cover below.

What does seasoning a dab nail actually mean?

Think of a new cast iron pan. Before you cook with it, you heat it to clear the factory finish and build a surface that works with you. Seasoning a nail is the same idea. For quartz, it mostly means a clean burn-off so the first dab tastes like your concentrate and not like the box it shipped in. For titanium, it means building up a thin layer on the metal so it heats evenly and does not add a metallic taste.

Ceramic and glass nails do not need seasoning at all. We compare all three materials in quartz vs ceramic vs titanium nails if you are still choosing.

Do quartz bangers need to be seasoned?

They need a burn-off, not a coating. Old guides told people to rub a new banger with oil, fruit preserves, salt or a thick layer of concentrate. We do not recommend any of that. Food products and cooking oils leave a residue that burns, discolors the quartz and changes the flavor of every dab after it. Water is not a seasoning either; it just steams away. A clean, dry, properly heated banger is what you are after.

How do you season a quartz banger step by step?

  1. Inspect and wipe it. Look for chips or hairline cracks, especially at the joint and the weld. Wipe the inside with a dry cotton swab to remove dust.
  2. Install it on your rig. Seat the banger fully on the joint so it sits straight and does not wobble. If you are unsure about fit, check how to measure a glass joint size.
  3. Heat it evenly. Aim your torch at the outside of the bucket and move it around the walls and base for about 30 to 60 seconds. You are clearing residue, not trying to make it glow for minutes.
  4. Let it cool on its own. Give it a few minutes to return to room temperature. Never dunk hot quartz in water or ice to speed things up; sudden temperature changes put stress on glass joints and can crack the rig.
  5. Repeat two or three times. After each cycle, swab out any haze once the banger is cool.
  6. Take a low-temp first dab. Let the banger cool down after heating, then use a small amount with a carb cap. Our guide to low temp vs high temp dabs explains why a lower temperature keeps flavor and the quartz in better shape.

A directional carb cap helps the first few dabs spread evenly across the floor of the banger. The Thick Glass Directional Carb Cap and the Ball Pukinbeagle Color Directional Carb Cap both fit common thermal and deep bucket bangers. See all options in our carb caps collection, and read how to use a carb cap if you are new to capping.

How do you season a titanium nail?

Titanium needs a little more patience. When titanium is heated, its surface forms a thin oxide layer, and many dabbers then build a light coat on top of that with a few slow, low-temperature dabs. The goal is an even surface that tastes clean.

  1. Check the grade. Grade 2 titanium is the grade most commonly sold for nails. Know what you have before you heat it.
  2. Heat until the color changes. Heat the nail evenly until you see the metal shift to a straw or bluish tint, then let it cool fully. Repeat two or three times. There is no need to hold it at glowing red.
  3. Add a light coat at low temperature. Once the nail has cooled to a moderate temperature, apply a small amount of concentrate and spread it across the surface with a dab tool. Let it vaporize slowly. Do this three or four times.
  4. Keep using it at moderate temperatures. Big dabs on a scorching nail tend to vaporize off before they can build any layer. Small amounts at moderate heat build an even coat over time.

Some old guides suggest heating a titanium nail and quenching it in ice water. We skip this step. It is not needed, and it is a bad habit to carry over to quartz or glass.

Which dab nails need seasoning?

Nail material Needs seasoning? What to do first Ongoing care
Quartz banger Burn-off only Heat empty 30 to 60 seconds, cool, repeat 2 to 3 times Swab after each dab, soak when cool
Titanium nail Yes Heat to a color change, cool, then build a light coat at low temperature Moderate temperatures, avoid scraping
Ceramic nail No Preheat gently the first time Avoid sudden temperature changes
Glass nail No Preheat gently the first time Handle carefully; glass is fragile

How do you keep a seasoned banger in good shape?

The best thing you can do is swab out the banger after every dab while it is still warm, not hot. That keeps residue from baking on and turning dark. Avoid long, repeated heating of an empty banger, which can cloud quartz over time. When it does need a deeper clean, let it cool fully and follow our guide on how to clean a quartz banger.

Terp pearls and inserts can also help a banger stay cleaner by spinning or holding the dab off the floor. Browse quartz inserts and pearls or shop new quartz bangers when it is time to replace one. If you would rather start with a matched setup, the 9" Encore Collection Barrel Matrix Oil Rig comes with a quartz banger included.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I heat a new quartz banger to season it?

About 30 to 60 seconds of even heat on the empty banger, then let it cool completely. Repeat the cycle two or three times before your first dab.

Should I put oil on a new quartz banger?

No. Cooking oils, fruit preserves and other coatings leave residue that burns and changes flavor. A clean burn-off is all quartz needs.

Do ceramic nails need to be seasoned?

No. Ceramic and glass nails do not need seasoning. Just preheat them gently the first time and avoid sudden temperature changes.

Can I cool my banger in water after heating it?

We do not recommend it. Sudden temperature changes put stress on the banger and the glass joint of your rig. Let it cool on its own.

Why does my new titanium nail taste metallic?

A new titanium nail has not built up its surface layer yet. Heat it to a color change a few times, then take a few small, low-temperature dabs to season it.
