To use a carb cap, heat your banger, let it cool to the temperature you like, add your dab, then set the cap over the opening and pull slowly while you move the cap to steer the airflow. The cap traps heat and limits how much air gets in, so your dab vaporizes more completely at a lower temperature. Below we cover the steps, the main cap styles, and why most people who try one never go back.

What is a carb cap?

A carb cap is a small cover that sits on top of a domeless banger while you dab. It has one or more small airflow holes, and it does two jobs at once: it holds heat inside the banger like a lid on a pot, and it restricts airflow so cool air is not constantly rushing over your dab. Caps come in quartz, glass, titanium and ceramic. The material mostly comes down to style and fit, since the function is the same.

Why should you use a carb cap?

Dabbing without a cap means a steady stream of cool air flows over the banger, cooling your concentrate before it fully vaporizes. To make up for it, people turn the heat way up, which mutes flavor. A cap fixes that. Here is what you get:

  • Lower temperature dabs. Trapped heat lets you dab cooler and still vaporize everything, which brings out more flavor. Our guide to low temp vs high temp dabs goes deeper.
  • A more even melt. A directional cap creates a swirling airflow that spreads the dab across the banger floor.
  • Less leftover oil. More of the dab vaporizes instead of pooling or getting pulled into the neck of the banger.
  • A pause button. If you need to stop mid-pull, leave the cap on. It holds the heat and the vapor until you are ready to finish.
  • Easier cleanup. Less residue in the banger means less to swab out afterward.

How do you use a carb cap step by step?

  1. Heat the banger. Warm the bottom evenly with your torch, or set your e-nail to the temperature you want.
  2. Let it cool. Wait before you dab. Thicker bangers hold heat longer and need a longer wait. A timer keeps this consistent from dab to dab.
  3. Add your dab. Use your dab tool to place a small amount on the floor of the banger.
  4. Cap it right away. Set the cap over the opening so it sits snugly.
  5. Pull slowly and steer. Inhale at a slow, steady pace. With a directional cap, turn it or tilt it so the airflow moves the melt around the banger.
  6. Lift and clear. Lift the cap to let fresh air in and clear the last of the vapor from the rig.
  7. Swab. Wipe out the banger with a cotton swab while it is still warm.

Set the cap down on a heat-resistant mat or a stand between dabs. If you are setting up a full station, our dab station checklist covers where everything goes.

What are the different types of carb caps?

Cap type How it works Best with
Directional cap Angled airflow tube you point and turn to swirl the melt Flat top and cup style bangers
Bubble cap Dome with an offset hole that seals over the rim Flat top bangers
Ball cap Round ball that settles into the opening Thermal and deep bucket bangers
Spinner cap Designed to spin terp pearls on the banger floor Bangers run with pearls
Marble or pill set Sits on the top of a slurper column Terp slurpers

The most important rule is fit. The cap needs to match the inner diameter of your banger. Too small and it falls in or leaks air, too big and it will not seat. Our breakdown of banger styles and the caps that fit them helps you match the two. Slurpers have their own setup, explained in what is a terp slurper.

Which carb cap should you get?

Start with the banger you already have.

Should you use terp pearls with a carb cap?

Pearls and caps work well together. Drop two or three pearls in the banger with your dab, cap it with a directional or spinner cap, and the airflow spins the pearls, which spreads the melt across the floor and helps the banger hold heat. You can find them in our inserts and pearls collection.

Is a carb cap worth it?

For anyone using a domeless banger, yes. It is one of the smallest, simplest pieces of gear you can add, and it changes how your dabs taste more than almost anything else. A lot of people start without one, then come back a few weeks later to pick one up. If you are buying your first banger, get a cap that fits it at the same time.

Frequently asked questions

What does a carb cap do?

A carb cap traps heat inside the banger and restricts airflow. That lets concentrate vaporize more completely at a lower temperature, which improves flavor and leaves less oil behind.

When do you put the carb cap on?

Put the cap on right after you add your dab to the banger, then pull slowly. Lift the cap at the end to let fresh air in and clear the rig.

Do carb caps fit every banger?

No. The cap needs to match the inner diameter and style of your banger. Thermal and deep bucket bangers usually need a ball cap or a cap labeled for thermal bangers, while flat tops take most directional and bubble caps.

Does the carb cap material matter?

Not much for function. Quartz, glass, titanium and ceramic caps all trap heat and restrict airflow the same basic way, so the choice mostly comes down to fit, style and personal preference.

Can I use a carb cap with terp pearls?

Yes. A directional or spinner cap makes the pearls spin on the banger floor, which spreads the melt and helps the banger hold heat for a more even dab.
