Dab Rig vs Bong: What's the Difference?

Dab Rig vs Bong: Encore barrel matrix dab rigs and an Encore bent neck beaker bong on a white background

Updated October 2026 · Shatter Kitchen

The main difference between a dab rig and a bong is what sits on the joint and how the glass is tuned around it. A dab rig uses a banger for concentrates and is usually small, with light diffusion so flavor comes through. A bong uses a bowl slide and is usually larger, with more volume and diffusion for bigger, cooler draws.

What is a dab rig?

A dab rig is a water pipe built for concentrates like wax, shatter, rosin and oil. Instead of a bowl, it uses a banger (or nail) that you heat with a torch or a compatible e-nail. You place the concentrate in the hot banger, cap it, and draw the vapor through a small amount of water.

Because vapor condenses quickly, rigs are designed to keep the path short. Most are compact, often 5 to 9 inches tall, with one simple perc such as a showerhead, matrix or fab egg. A good example is the 9" Encore Collection Barrel Matrix Oil Rig, which has a 14mm female joint, a bent neck and a quartz banger included. For tiny setups, the Encore Mini 5" Color Fab Egg Dab Rig keeps things as short as possible. Read how to choose a dab rig for a full buying guide.

What is a bong?

A bong, or water pipe, is built around a bowl slide that fits into a downstem or joint. Bongs are usually taller with a wider chamber, so they hold more water and more volume above it. That extra space lets you build a draw and clear it all at once, and a diffused downstem or perc breaks it into small bubbles for a cooler, smoother pull.

A classic example is the 12" 50 x 7mm Glass on Glass Water Pipe by Encore Collection, with an 18.8mm female joint, an 18/14 low profile downstem with diffuser cuts and a 14.4mm glass-on-glass bowl. If you are deciding on a shape, see beaker vs straight tube bongs.

Size and volume

Rigs stay small because there is no reason to build up a big cloud of vapor that cools and sticks to the glass. Bongs go bigger to hold a larger draw and more water. We explain the trade-offs in what size dab rig you should get.

Diffusion

More diffusion means more cooling, which suits a bong. On a rig, heavy diffusion mutes flavor and leaves oil throughout the glass. Our guide to percolators and diffusion goes deeper on this.

Joints and attachments

Both use standard ground glass joints, but rigs lean toward 10mm and 14mm while bongs lean toward 14mm and 18mm. Rigs also tend to have a bent neck so the banger sits away from your face.

Can you use a dab rig as a bong, or a bong as a dab rig?

Technically, yes. Since both use standard joints, you can swap a banger and a bowl with the right fit or adapter. But neither piece will work at its best. A bong used for concentrates spreads vapor across too much glass, so you lose flavor and end up cleaning oil out of the percs. A small rig used with a bowl has little volume and light diffusion, so draws feel hot and quick, and residue builds up fast.

Most people who do both keep one of each. It is easier to clean, easier to dial in, and each piece does its job properly. Browse our dab rigs and bongs to find a match for each.

Which should you get first?

  • Get a dab rig if you mainly use concentrates and care most about flavor. Plan on adding a carb cap and a dab tool; pick up a banger from our quartz bangers collection if your rig does not include one.
  • Get a bong if you want bigger draws with more cooling. Look for a diffused downstem and a glass-on-glass bowl, or browse bowls and slides to upgrade.
  • Want something in between? Read about multi-chamber bongs if you want more diffusion, or recyclers if you want smooth function on a rig.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between a dab rig and a bong?

A dab rig uses a banger for concentrates and is usually small with light diffusion. A bong uses a bowl slide and is usually larger with more volume and diffusion.

Can I put a bowl on a dab rig?

If the joint size matches, a bowl will fit. It works, but the small chamber and light diffusion of a rig are not designed for it, so most people keep separate pieces.

Can I dab out of a bong?

You can fit a banger to a bong with the right joint or adapter, but the large chamber and heavy percs spread vapor across too much glass. You lose flavor and spend more time cleaning.

Why are dab rigs smaller than bongs?

Vapor from concentrates cools and condenses quickly. A smaller rig keeps the path short so more flavor reaches you and less residue sticks to the glass.

What joint size do dab rigs and bongs use?

Dab rigs most often use 10mm or 14mm joints. Bongs most often use 14mm or 18mm joints. Always check the product details before buying accessories.
