What Is a Bubbler? How It Works and How to Choose One

What Is a Bubbler: an EVO dewar bubbler, a Sherlock bubbler and an EVO bubbler on a white background

Updated October 2026 · Shatter Kitchen

A bubbler is a hand-held glass pipe with a small built-in water chamber. It gives you the water cooling of a bong in something close to the size of a hand pipe. You choose one mainly by shape, size, percolator and whether the mouthpiece comes off for travel, and if you want water in a piece you can hold in one hand, a bubbler is the answer.

How does a bubbler work?

A bubbler has the same basic parts as a hand pipe: a bowl, a carb hole and a mouthpiece. The difference is a small water chamber in the middle. When you inhale, air is pulled from the bowl down a short stem into the water, bubbles up through it and then travels to the mouthpiece. That pass through water cools each pull and gives it a soft, bubbly feel.

Most bubblers have a fixed bowl that is part of the glass. Some use a removable glass-on-glass slide in a standard joint size, which makes them easier to clean and lets you swap bowls. If yours has a joint, our bowls and slides come in common sizes.

Bubbler vs hand pipe vs bong: what is the difference?

Hand pipe Bubbler Bong
Water None Small chamber Large chamber
Size Pocket size Hand size Tabletop
Cooling Least Moderate Most
Setup None Add a little water Water, stem and bowl
Best for Quick and simple Water cooling on the go Home sessions

A bubbler sits right in the middle. It is just as easy to use as a hand pipe but adds the cooling of water. It will not match a full-size bong for volume, and that is the point: it stays small. If you are also weighing up a rig, here is how a dab rig and a bong differ.

What are the main types of bubblers?

Hammer bubblers

Shaped like a hammer, with a flat base so the piece can stand on its own. They are a popular all-round choice.

Sherlock bubblers

A curved neck that bends down and back up, similar to a classic Sherlock pipe. Comfortable to hold and good looking.

Sidecar bubblers

The mouthpiece sits off to the side of the chamber, which keeps your face away from the bowl and helps keep water out of the mouthpiece.

Mini and pocket bubblers

Small enough for a bag. Many have a removable mouthpiece so the piece packs flat without a neck sticking out, which is a big plus for travel.

Recycler and perc bubblers

Some bubblers borrow percs from bigger pieces, like gridded or waffle discs, matrix percs and showerheads. A few even use a recycler loop. Read how a recycler works if you want the full picture.

How do you choose a bubbler?

  • Size and portability. If it is going in a bag, look for a compact shape and a removable mouthpiece.
  • Stability. A flat base, like on a hammer bubbler, means it can stand up between pulls.
  • Perc. A simple slitted or few-hole diffuser does a great job in a small chamber. A gridded or matrix perc adds more diffusion if you want it.
  • Bowl. Fixed bowls are simple. Removable slides are easier to clean and replace.
  • Material. Borosilicate glass gives the cleanest taste and is easy to clean. Silicone travels well but feels different. Our comparison of glass, silicone and acrylic water pipes covers the trade-offs.

Planning to use concentrates? A bubbler with a standard joint can take a compatible banger, and a simple matrix perc handles vapor better than a side-firing perc, which tends to leave more reclaim. For regular dabbing, a dedicated rig is still the better tool.

How much water should go in a bubbler?

Add just enough water to cover the slits or holes at the bottom of the stem. Take a test pull with nothing in the bowl. If water gurgles up toward the mouthpiece, pour a little out. Because the chamber is small, change the water every session to keep it fresh.

How do you clean a bubbler?

Small chambers get dirty faster than big ones, so a quick rinse after each session helps a lot. For a deep clean, cover the openings, add isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, shake well, then rinse with warm water. The same steps from our guide on how to clean a glass bong work on bubblers too. A pipe cleaner helps reach the bowl and stem.

What if you want a bit more than a bubbler?

If you like the idea of a bubbler but want a little more water and a base that sits on a table, a compact water pipe is the next step up. The 7" Encore Bent Neck Beaker with Fixed Stem is small, sturdy and has a fixed stem, so there is no downstem to lose, plus a thick color funnel bowl. The 8" Mini Color Beaker is another compact option.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a bubbler and a bong?

A bubbler is a hand-held pipe with a small built-in water chamber. A bong is a larger tabletop water pipe, usually with a removable stem and bowl. Bubblers trade some volume and cooling for portability.

Is a bubbler better than a hand pipe?

A bubbler adds water cooling that a hand pipe does not have, while staying nearly as easy to use. A hand pipe is smaller and needs no water, so the better pick depends on what you value.

How much water do you put in a bubbler?

Just enough to cover the slits or holes at the bottom of the stem. Take a test pull and pour some out if water reaches the mouthpiece.

Can you use a bubbler for dabs?

A bubbler with a standard joint can take a compatible banger, but a dedicated dab rig handles vapor better and leaves less reclaim.

How do you clean a glass bubbler?

Rinse it after each session. For a deep clean, cover the openings, shake it with isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt, then rinse with warm water.
